Evolutionary Divide and Conquer for the Set-Covering Problem

چکیده
Genetic Algorithms provide a weak search method that scales rather badly when used in their traditional form. On the other hand, the set covering problem, when used to solve real-world problems, presents an enormous search space for genetic algorithms. A method is presented, by which genetic material is maintained for a long time within the population to allow a greater portion of the search space to be covered in the hope of producing greater quality solutions. The problem is broken down into smaller subproblems for which a population of solutions is evolved. The quality of those solutions is then assessed depending on how well they t in with solutions to other subproblems. We nd that the method has merit and potential, and we discuss its sensitivity to various parameters. Acknowledgements First of all, I would like to thank my supervisor, Dave Corne, for his availability, his friendliness, his support, and his calmness in the most desperate moments, and for his full con dence in me. He has always been a source of reassurance and encouragement. I would also like to thank Luisa, for showing in nite patience and the will to always listen to me in the most troublesome moments of this year|who can ask anybody for more? Further I want to express my gratitude to my parents, my brother, Jos e Miguel, for his proofreading, and especially my sister Carmen. They alone understand how much help and support they have shown to me, and how important my \weekend escapes" were to succeeding in this work. I would also like to thank Paul C. H. Chu, who kindly agreed to provide me with the results of the problems of the OR-Library, reported in [Beasley & Chu 95]. My gratitude also to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland, which partially supported my studies here at the University of Edinburgh through the grant D7575254/D32. Thanks also to John, who bore with my insistent questions on the correct usage of the English Language. With out your help, this would certainly be a nightmare to read. Last (but not least) I would like to thank Bety, Dae Gyu, Laura, Margarita, Olga, Roman, and especially Carlos, Delmi and Alejandro|you sure know what friends are. Rest assured I will never forget you. i Table of

Free Vibration Analysis of Repetitive Structures using Decomposition, and Divide-Conquer Methods
This paper consists of three sections. In the first section an efficient method is used for decomposition of the canonical matrices associated with repetitive structures. to this end, cylindrical coordinate system, as well as a special numbering scheme were employed. In the second section, divide and conquer method have been used for eigensolution of these structures, where the matrices are in ...
متن کاملInduction of Logic Programs by Example-Guided Unfolding
Resolution has been used as a specialisation operator in several approaches to top-down induction of logic programs. This operator allows the overly general hypothesis to be used as a declarative bias that restricts not only what predicate symbols can be used in produced hypotheses, but also how the predicates can be invoked. The two main strategies for top-down induction of logic programs, Cov...
متن کاملCovering vs. Divide-and-Conquer for Top-Down Induction of Logic Programs
Covering and divide-and-conquer are two wellestablished search techniques for top-down in duction of propositional theories However, for top-down induction of logic programs, only covering has been formalized and used extensively In this work, the divide-and-conquer technique is formalized as well and compared to the covering technique in a logic program ming framework Covering works by repea...
متن کاملA set-covering formulation for a drayage problem with single and double container loads
This paper addresses a drayage problem, which is motivated by the case study of a real carrier. Its trucks carry one or two containers from a port to importers and from exporters to the port. Since up to four customers can be served in each route, we propose a set-covering formulation for this problem where all possible routes are enumerated. This model can be efficiently solved to optimality b...
متن کاملA Local Branching Approach for the Set Covering Problem
The set covering problem (SCP) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem. This paper investigates development of a local branching approach for the SCP. This solution strategy is exact in nature, though it is designed to improve the heuristic behavior of the mixed integer programming solver. The algorithm parameters are tuned by design of experiments approach. The proposed method is te...
متن کاملSingle Assignment Capacitated Hierarchical Hub Set Covering Problem for Service Delivery Systems Over Multilevel Networks
The present study introduced a novel hierarchical hub set covering problem with capacity constraints. This study showed the significance of fixed charge costs for locating facilities, assigning hub links and designing a productivity network. The proposed model employs mixed integer programming to locate facilities and establish links between nodes according to the travel time between an origin-...
